Sally Rooney Reveals She Can’t Enter the UK

Arcadiadaily – Sally Rooney Reveals she did not travel to the United Kingdom this week to accept a literary award, citing fears that she could be arrested. The 34-year-old Irish novelist, acclaimed for Normal People and Conversations with Friends, has publicly supported and financially contributed to Palestine Action, a group the UK government banned in July under terrorism legislation. The ban followed a raid on an RAF base in which activists caused £7 million in damage to military aircraft.

At the Sky Arts awards, where she won for her novel Intermezzo, her publisher Alex Bowler read a statement on Rooney’s behalf. “I’m advised that I can no longer safely enter the UK without potentially facing arrest,” it said. Sally Rooney Reveals that while she regretted missing the event. She remained committed to supporting non-violent protest and expressing solidarity with Palestine.

Funding and Legal Risks

Rooney has pledged proceeds from her four novels and BBC television adaptations to support Palestine Action. While she has no formal role with the BBC, her financial contributions could be deemed a criminal offence under anti-terrorism laws. UK legislation states that supporting or funding a proscribed group can carry penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

Palestine Action has operated for four years, targeting companies with links to the Israeli military. Authorities argue that while some protests involve vandalism, the large-scale damage in several incidents amounted to terrorism. Around 30 individuals are currently facing trial, with allegations including violent clashes with police.

Political and Public Debate

The group’s proscription has fueled debate across the UK. The Metropolitan Police arrested nearly 900 people in London last week during protests against the ban. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood insisted that “supporting Palestine and supporting a proscribed terrorist group are not the same thing.” But she backed officers who made the arrests.

Palestine Action’s co-founder is challenging the ban in court, though the government is seeking to block that appeal. Officials have warned sympathizers to consider the severe legal consequences. While stressing that general protest against the war in Gaza remains permitted.

Sally Rooney Reveals her position has intensified debate over free expression, activism, and the reach of anti-terror laws in the UK.
