The October 7 assault left more than 1,200 Israelis dead and saw Hamas abduct 251 people. Israeli officials believe about 48 hostages remain in captivity. Trump stressed that any serious effort for peace must begin with their release, not symbolic diplomatic gestures.

In the past two days, France, Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal formally recognized a Palestinian state. With more countries expected to join. Supporters say the recognition underscores frustration over the ongoing war in Gaza, which has devastated the enclave without a clear path to resolution.
Israel and its allies sharply disagree. Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, called the move a “charade,” arguing it supports terrorism instead of fostering peace. “They feel they are doing something, but they are not promoting peace. On the contrary, they are supporting terrorism,” he told reporters.
The United States remains a firm opponent. Washington boycotted a UN session as France cast its vote and has consistently used its veto at the Security Council to shield Israel from unfavorable resolutions.
