Arcadia’s Little Leaguers are back on the field, as tryouts at Ingleside Middle School start the 2012 baseball season.

The tryouts were on three consecutive Saturdays at Ingleside, one of three locations where the Little League plays. In front of coaches preparing for this week’s draft, each player was put through a 3-4 minute tryout period, where they would go through five fundamental baseball drills.

Each player started in the outfield, where they fielded two fly balls. They then went to the shortstop position to field two groundballs and completing each play with a throw to first. The next stop was the pitcher’s mound for two pitches. Finally, the player had a chance to take a couple swings off a batting tee. After the last hit, the player ran around the bases.

Kevin Macdonald has been coaching in the Arcadia Little League for the past five years. His son Reilly will be playing his second year in the Minors division.

“I’m looking to see if they have a good arm, good swing, can get the ball over the plate when they are on the mound, how fast they are, and most importantly I want to see if they are having fun,” the coach said.

The draft will be this week, which gives teams time practice before the season starts on March 19.

Matt Klemish and his son Shane were playing catch before it was Shane’s turn. Matt said after a long week of school, it was easy to get his son to the early-morning tryouts.

There were about 300 Little Leaguers at the final tryout, according to Brad Novacek, who has been involved with Arcadia Little League for the last eight years and was manning the sign-up table.
